Traditional Camps

Adventure Camp
An activity- and enrichment-based kids day camp — have fun and make friends!
Here at WRA, we’re always ready for an adventure! If your child wants to broaden their horizons by trying new things, meeting new people and participating in developmentally appropriate group activities all while having fun and making new friends, Adventure Camp is the place to be this summer! In addition to traditional games and sports, campers will enjoy field trips, hikes, swimming and crafts all while enjoying WRA’s historical campus and the beautiful region of northeast Ohio. Campers will have the opportunity to cool off from the sun in WRA’s famous Ellsworth Hall dining room where they will enjoy a lunch prepared by nationally published Chef Eddie Mundy and his staff. Just a taste of what WRA has to offer!

Art Camps

LET'S CREATE! ART CAMP
Join local Hudson artist, Jackie Palumbo, owner of Art by Jackie, for a week of creating! The week will include discovering various styles of art and creating collages, pointillism, abstract art and more. Students will be provided with all the supplies. They will be given plenty of encouragement to experiment and express themselves! Completed projects will be sent home that day if dry, or at the end of the week. Come dressed in paint clothes.

Jewelry Design Camp
Do you love jewelry? Join us to learn how to create your own unique pieces! Throughout the week, you will learn a dozen techniques including fused glass, alcohol inks, wire wrapping and more. You will also make your own jewelry holder and a jewelry organizer. Students will be provided with all the supplies. At the end of the week, you will bring home a wide variety of handcrafted jewelry items. Led by local Hudson artist, Jackie Palumbo, owner of Art by Jackie.

WRA Improvisational Acting Camp with Gary Rybka
Do you like the show Whose Line Is It Anyway? Are you quick to tell a joke or entertain others? This is a camp for you. This camp will explore Improv acting. Students will learn about Improv and participate in many Improv games, and the week will end with an Improv show for the parents!

STEM CAMPS

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM education integrates concepts that are usually taught as separate subjects in different classes and emphasizes the application of knowledge to real-life situations. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. Early STEM education can promote ongoing academic success, and children who learn STEM concepts throughout their education are better prepared to meet increasingly technology-focused professional requirements.
Digital Fabrication – “Maker Space” Camp
Led by WRA’s very own gifted Chief Innovation Officer Matt Gerber and his incredible team, campers will receive training, instruction and create several products each day. Campers will learn to make, create and innovate in WRA’s remarkable 6,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art, Wang Innovation Center. Campers will explore cutting edge techniques such as design, 3D scanning, garment and UV printing, vinyl cutting, poster and decal creation, laser and plasma cutting, electronics, robotics and more!

Advanced Digital Fabrication – “Maker Space” Camp
Advanced Digital Fabrication Camp is designed for campers who have already attended and completed the Digital Fabrication Camp. This advanced camp allows participants to explore more advanced fabrication techniques and applications. Advanced Digital Fabrication Camp will be an interactive week building upon the skills and techniques already acquired. Campers will spend most of their week taking their skills to the next level of design and creation by learning about electronics, microprocesses, embroidery, sewing, CNC milling, molding, and casting, CNC routing, robotics and more.

Who is CODEMOJI?
Codemoji is an educational technology company teaching young students in grades 1 – 8 how to code. Their programs also explore other computer science components such as gaming and various scientific concepts. Students learn to build basic web pages, animations, games; explore multiple coding languages; program robots; conduct science experiments all while having fun at the same time!

Does your 3rd-5th grade student love navigating how things work on a computer? CODEMOJI’s computer science programs teach students to enjoy all things related to coding and the web while building problem-solving and creative-thinking skills. Our staff of educators delivers clear, entertaining instruction to ensure students have fun while learning complex coding skills using popularized emojis that represent HTML text, which lowers the barriers to new coders and increases their excitement and understanding of computer science. Students build animations, websites, and video games; explore multiple coding languages; program robots; create STEM-based projects both on and offline and are encouraged to share their projects when they get home on our web-based platform. Students also work with interactive circuit boards to understand the basics of currents and work with their teacher to build a handful of fun hands-on projects!

1st and 2nd graders will learn the basics of coding and computer science as they are immersed in STEM activities. Students will collaborate to program robots to complete tasks, work with emojis as they dive into the online Codemoji platform and participate in offline unplugged coding activities and games. Throughout the program, students will design a website and learn to utilize their newly acquired coding skills to advance through interactive lessons. The Codemoji will challenge students as they advance through HTML, CS, and JS coding basics and promote the desire to continue their coding learning outside of the classroom.

Is your 3rd-5th grade student already a video game wizard? Let them take their skills and understanding to the next level and design their OWN game and screen animations! Codemoji's newest computer science class teaches students how to bring video game components to life and develop unique design concepts. In addition to classic STEM learning that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEAM programs also focus on the Arts such as humanities, language arts, music, visual arts, design and new media. STEAM investigates the same concepts as STEM but does this through inquiry and problem-based learning methods used in the creative process.

STEAM + Reading = STREAM! This STREAM-y camps brings The Bridge to Sharktooth Island, the first book in the Challenge Island series, to life! You and your STEAM Team will join book characters Daniel, Joy, Kimani, and Davinci on their Sharktooth Island adventures from bridge-building to pirate ship exploring to mixing up spectacular slime seas. You’ll dive into the fascinating world of SHARKS and tackle an ocean full of shark-inspired challenges! Challenge Island: Island Tube Fever Camp
Tune into imagination and creativity at Challenge Island’s Island Tube Camp! You and your STEAM Team will build your very own studio and take part in a whole haul of super YouTube inspired activities: From slime to squishies to science experiments; from taste tests to mystery wheels to Secret Island Surprise Balls! One of our most “liked” camps, this Kids’ Choice Challenge Island adventure gets thumbs up all around! A supervised lunch will be provided for all campers attending both a morning and afternoon Challenge Island camp.

Head Start Basketball
HEAD START BASKETBALL CAMPS emphasize the fundamentals of basketball with individual attention given to each young player. The campers will be taught the basic techniques of shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding and defense. The camp will not only provide a fundamental base for each young player, but it will also be a fun and enjoyable experience for every camper.

WRA Tennis Camp
Led by veteran tennis coach Kevin Vaughn, the WRA tennis camp combines fun drills and activities with individualized tennis instruction for the beginner through the experienced player. With more than 30 years of experience, Coach Vaughn has mentored 12 Division I college players, many ranked junior players and numerous successful teams. He is engaging, innovative and energetic — all of which will contribute to a robust WRA tennis camp experience. Each session will include stroke of the day instruction, effective serve technique work, singles and doubles strategies and match play experience.

Girls Lacrosse Camp with Gary Rybka
Now in its second year at WRA, Girls Lacrosse Camp is the place to learn to play or hone the skills you already have! Gary Rybka and Mackenzie Lewis, high school coaches at Solon and Uniontown, will teach the skills needed for lacrosse. Whether you are new to the game or want to learn more advanced skills, Gary and Mackenzie will teach these skills in a fun and creative way. Girls will be divided based on age and experience for this camp. Girls should bring a stick, mouthguard, goggles (especially for the advanced), a water bottle and a snack. The camp will cover the basics of cradling, scooping, dodging, defending and shooting. The more advanced players will do these skills as well as team concepts. The camp will end with an “Olympic” style of games to see which team reigns supreme.

Boarding Camps

Head Start Basketball Training Camp Elite Skill Development & Performance Combine
Campers can expect 3 days of hard work, intense skill instruction, and learning how to be a great teammate on and off the court at the Training Camp. All camp activities will take place on the campus of Western Reserve Academy and players and coaches will stay in the dorms on campus. Mornings will focus on individual skill development, afternoons will be reserved for break down work in 2-on-2, 3-on-3, and 4-on-4 scenarios and the evenings will feature competition in 5-on-5 games. Players will have a minimum 5-1 player to coach ratio and will receive a high level of attention from coaches throughout the camp.

ACADEMIC/PREP CAMPS

SAT / ACT Test Prep Class with Deidre Bullock
Ms. Bullock comes to WRA with over 20 years of experience in tutoring for the SAT and ACT. Her programs have assisted students in gaining admission into their top college choices, as well as yielding scholarships. In addition to providing scholars with instruction and review of the content areas, a strong focus is placed on strategy and approach in taking the test. This class will increase familiarity, hones test taking skills and improves students confidence.
