The first couple days of school have been interesting. Unlike Reserve, the whole grade is in one class, only 12 students, including myself. Instead of changing classes, the teachers move to them for each subject and we stay in one classroom, at one desk, all day. Because the class is so small, its like one family. Everyone is friends with everyone. You could say the same for the teachers as well. They are all pretty close with the students and are a lot more lenient. When the teacher says “work in pairs” we get into groups of four or five, or even when it's individual work, we always find ourselves in groups.
They also have snack time. For the younger kids it's like a little lunch break and then recess, but for us older kids, we all sit and talk at the lunch tables outside. Then much later at 1pm, we go eat lunch together. Everything is outside here. Which I noticed is a common theme. The houses, kitchen, gym, are all outside, and it's nice to have all that fresh air.
It being a K-12 school, it's very different having little kids around me all the time, especially during meal times, but it's really cool, and they remind me to have fun, and not take everything so seriously.
We also have to put our phones in a bin at the beginning of the school day, and pick it up when we end. It was odd at first but I definitely find myself pushing to make conversation, rather than hide on my phone. Although it is kind of annoying when I can't look something up and show them when they are clueless about what I am talking about, and also when it prevents me from taking pictures all together.
