Today we had the party for kids at Guayabal, a recreation center that used to be a school. There were about 20 kids, lots of cute little babies, and sweet older kids too. With all the work we put into making the piñatas, we were all so excited to have kids break them open! After eating a quick lunch we arrived, and though we got there a few minutes after it was supposed to start, nobody was there. So, we took out all our supplies from the car, piñatas, cookies, juice boxes, and paint and began to set up our things. About an hour later, some families began to arrive, and all the kids were anxious to start! So we hung the piñatas and had the little kids start first. Some of the kids were really eager to go, but most of them were very shy and clung to their mothers instead. Especially one little chubby baby named Owen, who liked to bury his face toward his mother anytime we said hello. When the littles had finished it was time for the older kids. We hung theirs higher and used another rope to move the piñata around. To make it harder, we had Shannon spin the kids around as we all counted together “Uno! Dos! Tres!”until 20. The older kids really got into it, though we didn't make it easy for them, moving it up and down, left and right. Afterwards, we all went and sat down in the shade. Shannon and I read to them a story about a bunny named Tito who learned to share. Then we asked the kids to paint what they thought of the story. As they were painting, I came and sat down next to them and started to talk. I asked their names, what they liked to do, and what they were painting. One little boy, Cristian was painting Tito, he liked to paint, but more so draw. So later when he had finished painting, I asked if he wanted to paint another, he said no so then I asked if he wanted to draw and he said yes! So I went around asking everyone if they had a pen or a pencil but no one had one. So finally, Boby went to his car and searched for something to draw with. He came back with a single ballpoint pen, but it was all we needed. So I gave it to him and he began to draw the beautiful mountain vista in front of us. Then Christian went to go play soccer with the other little boys and I began talking with the little girls. I asked them what sports they like, what TV they like, what music they like, trying to connect with them. Each one told me a different show that they liked, Adriana liked Minnie mouse, Fatima liked stitch, and Sofia liked miraculous. So one thing that I could do for them was make them a little something of a thing that they enjoyed. So I did just that.
