YSP | Week 2

Week Two of YSP was packed with events. On Wednesday, we traveled up to Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. The students were able to learn about fantastic artists from 1968 like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and The Supremes. They even had a temporary pinball exhibit which harkened back to our first night listening to "Pinball Wizard" at Blossom. At the Science Center, the NASA Glenn Space Center gave the YSP students a first-hand look at the technology which led directly to the Apollo program. After the long day, the students traveled to Little Italy to fuel up with Mama Santa's pizza.

When they returned to campus, the students had the chance to cook marshmallows at a bonfire outside of Bicknell and gaze into the stars at the Frost Observatory. Jupiter and Saturn were clearly visible through the telescope and dazzled the students.

On Saturday, we traveled to University Circle for Euclid Beach days at the Western Reserve Historical Society. In addition to learning about the influential Stokes brothers, we also had a chance to learn about Cleveland History from the 1700s on as well as ride the original Euclid Beach carousel. We then walked to the Cleveland Museum of Art for a quick 1968 art lesson from Sarah Horgan. We ended the day with a trip to and snacks from West Side Market.

We finished the week with a thrilling Akron Rubberducks game at Canal Park. Joanie was able to throw out the first pitch and the 'Ducks pulled out a win in extra innings. As the third week begins, the students are hard at work preparing posters and a final theater presentation for Friday.
