Senior Michael Filippelli honored with citizenship award

The Cleveland Italian American Heritage Committee is a volunteer-run group that is "devoted to preserving the culture and heritage of Italian Americans in Northeast Ohio."

Each year, they honor local Italian American community members, of whom there are over 125,000 in Northeast Ohio. Last week, WRA senior Michael Filippelli '22 was one of six honorees bestowed with recognition in a formal ceremony.

Filippelli was named the Cleveland Italian Youth Citizen of the Year for 2021. He was nominated by Matthew Zone, VP of Western Reserve Land Bank, for his leadership to the Italian American community.

At the beginning of this school year, Filippelli played a foundational role in launching a new student organization, the Italian Community at Reserve. The group aims to provide the community with history of the Italian community in both the Cleveland area and the broader U.S., facilitate authentic Italian meals throughout the year, and plan events for both members and non-members.

For these efforts and for displaying exemplary citizenship, he has been recognized by prominent leaders in the Italian American community.

Bravo, Michael!
