Summer may offer a break from the school-year routine, but our Pioneers certainly don’t slow down. This summer, students pursued impressive opportunities across academics, entrepreneurship, athletics and beyond.
During the last weekend in May, Western Reserve Academy students Wen X. ’27, Richard Y. ’28 and Harry X. ’28 traveled to Penn State University with Department Chair Ms. Allen to compete in the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) competition. Founded in 1976, ARML is a premier high school team mathematics competition that brings together over 1,800 students globally in regional teams of 15 to solve complex problems simultaneously at host universities. Wen, Richard and Harry earned their spots on the official Ohio ARML team through their strong performances in both the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) contest and the Ohio High School Mathematics Invitational Olympiad (OHMIO). Congratulations to Wen, Richard and Harry on this impressive accomplishment. Special congratulations to Wen for being voted the MVP of his team.
Julian F. ’26 capped off an extraordinary Reserve career with top honors in marksmanship and scale modeling. Recipient of a Civilian Marksmanship Program scholarship on account of his riflery statistics, leadership qualities and academic performance, the honor follows a previous scholarship that afforded him the opportunity to compete and debate in D.C. Beyond the riflery range, Julian captured two first-place gold medals out of over 3,000 entries at the world’s largest modeling competition. He is the youngest adult competitor to achieve a double-gold sweep.
Will S. ’27 reached international athletic heights this summer, winning a gold medal representing the USA at the Latin American Baseball Classic in August. Selected as one of just 17 players nationwide from a pool of more than 4,000 athletes, Will helped lead the 18U USA-LABC Team to a division championship victory over 10 national teams, including Cuba, Mexico and host Dominican Republic. In his tournament start on the mound, Will, a frontline power pitcher with an aggressive downslope, struck out five batters across four-plus innings, turning a 4-3 lead over to the bullpen. Winston D. ’29 showcased global leadership this summer at the United Nations headquarters in New York. His presentation marked the culmination of “Sports for Everyone,” a multiyear initiative by Winston and co-founder Zijia N. to advance gender equality, youth leadership and environmental sustainability through athletics. Winston earned the UN Sustainable Development Goals Certificate of Recognition. Read more here!
