Science

Science classes offer students a breadth and depth of exposure in life and physical sciences

Courses are designed to engage students of wide-ranging ability and interest and at every grade level. Each course builds a foundation of essential knowledge, but we emphasize science as a process of inquiry, facilitated by laboratory experience. We believe the goal of science instruction at the secondary level should be the development of positive attitudes and interests related to science, an ability to see the world through the lens of science, an understanding of basic concepts, and skill in critical analysis and sequential reasoning. Deep understanding is achieved by engaging prior understanding and by embracing the vital role of factual knowledge within conceptual frameworks.

Spotlight Course

marine biology

In this course students will learn about the diverse groups of marine organisms, their ecosystems and habitats, and current events in today’s oceans such as overfishing, ocean acidification, restoration, and marine protected areas. Through discussion, readings, projects, and labs, students will learn about the diversity of ocean environments and how the creatures that live there are adapted to best survive. Students will learn theories pertinent to ecology as a whole, as well as the specifics to the ocean. Ideally, the class will culminate with travel to experience some of the topics they have studied.

The Path

Core Courses

Biology (freshman course)

Chemistry (3 levels: Regular, Honors, CL)

Physics (3 levels: Regular, Honors, CL)

Electives: CL Microbiology, CL Chemistry, CL Physics, Cancer Immunology, Advanced Cancer Immunology, CL Cancer Immunology, Cancer Informatics, Ecological Sustainability, Astronomy, Advanced Astronomy, Exercise Physiology, CL Synthetic Biology 1 and 2, Ocean Topics

Around Campus and Beyond: Summer Programs with Baylor College of Medicine, The Cleveland Clinic, Case Western University, and the Heidelberg Program.
