Dear Friends,

I write today thinking of the WRA community. Please know that both as individuals and a collective, you have been in my thoughts. The tragic events of the past few weeks have brought to light the need for systemic and systematic change both within our institution and the world at large.

I remain incredibly grateful for all of the brave WRA voices of Black students and alumni who have shared their truths. I am heartbroken to hear of pain that has been experienced. It is not okay. Every individual within our community deserves to be heard, respected and to feel a sense of belonging. WRA can and must do better.

In the wake of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, I have found myself reflecting, confronting my own practices, reading, engaging with experts in the arena of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, attending virtual workshops and actively listening. As a school leader it is incumbent upon me to serve WRA with practices rooted in anti-racism and foster a robust sense of community for all.

In thinking about our now as well as the future of WRA, a number of initiatives are in phases of implementation or have already been put into action:

  1. It is with great excitement and appreciation that I share the appointment of Mrs. Brandi Wheeler as the full-time Interim Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Mrs. Wheeler will continue to lead both the faculty and student DEI committees and will be a member of the Executive Team. Her office will reside within the Student Life Office.
  2. Anti-racist education for students and employees will be part of orientations, professional development and ongoing conversations throughout the year. WRA is partnering with experts to help guide us in this work.
  3. The faculty DEI committee has been hard at work planning discussions and listening sessions for students and alumni. An invitation to a "Student Race Space" conversation next week will be forthcoming.
  4. Prior to the start of the school year, WRA is committed to hiring and recruiting for board service professionals of color.
  5. WRA is examining its curriculum and implementing opportunities for exploration of topics of social justice, tolerance, inclusion and a multitude of perspectives.

To be clear, these efforts are not enough, but they are a start. Please know that I am committed to making WRA be the best community it can be. An open invitation awaits to converse with me; I look forward to listening and partnering with you. Thank you for all of your efforts to strengthen and fortify community at WRA and in our world at large. I am grateful to engage in this meaningful work with you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Buck
