WRA Track & Field reaches new heights at Mayfield Invitational
11 personal records set by Pioneer Track & Field athletes at the Mayfield Invitational.
On Friday afternoon, the WRA Track and Field Program traveled north to compete in the highly competitive Mayfield Invitational (10 teams).
Despite the cold and very wet weather, junior sprint standout Jordanne Nichols brought the sizable crowd that turned out to watch the meet to their feet multiple times. Nichols set the meet record in the 200m (26.3 seconds), anchored the 4x100 relay (K. Hau-Golden; S. Davis; M. Maze-Ingram) to a first place finish, and anchored the 4x200 relay (R. Rubiano; K. Hau-Golden; and M. Maze-Ingram) to a second place finish.
Junior Elba Heddesheimer had a PR in the 1600m tonight (5:46) to take home the gold medal. Ethan Zhang '22, Elias Vail '25 and Ike Nabuife '23 all ran PRs in the 100m. Freshman sprint and jump specialist Ky Hau-Golden won the long jump and took 3rd behind Nichols in the 200m.
Junior Rebecca Rubiano ran a PR in the 300IH, and so did senior captain Sophia Shaheen in the 400m and sophomore Sydney Davis in the 200m. The boys 4x200 relay team of Elias Vail, Ethan Zhang, Ike Nabuife, and junior Tommy Cahill took 5th overall, tying their season best time in the event. Senior Omar White-Evans ran a PR in the 400m. Overall, there were 11 personal records set in the meet by WRA track athletes.
This was the final meet for program captains Paige Bodnar '22, Esme Cummins '22 and Sophia Shaheen '22. Captains Bodnar, Cummins and Shaheen have all served as tremendous leaders this year as the program underwent numerous structural changes. Their energy and passion for Track and Field during their time at WRA, coupled with their ability to connect with student-athletes, helped to make the Spring 2022 season a huge success and certainly one to remember.
