Behind solid performances from many players, the Pioneers start the season strong in Willoughby.
The Boys Basketball team began the 2022-2023 season with 3 straight wins. The Pioneers took on O.U.R. Dohn Prep & Southwest Ohio Prep.
On Friday evening vs O.U.R., five players reached double figures and every player who dressed earned playing time. Trey Autry ‘23, led the way with 16, Carmelo Adkins ‘23 and Damarius Owens ‘24 each had 14 points, Torr Sorensen ‘25 connected on four threes to end with 12 and Eemeli Yalaho ‘23 had 10. The Pioneers offense caught fire from deep making 14 threes and finished the game with 19 assists. The final result: 97-69
In game two vs Dohn Prep, Adkins erupted for 26 points and George Washington commit Trey Autry scored 22. The Pioneers struggled to shoot the ball from distance but were able to get to the foul line 20+ times. Ultimately the team was able to hold off Dohn Prep, winning 85-76.
On Sunday afternoon, WRA defeated Southwest OH Prep 92-81. Pioneer big man Eemeli Yalaho scored 19, despite fouling out with ten minutes to play. The Pioneers stretched their lead in the first half and went into halftime with a 51-34 lead. The Pioneers were in foul trouble in the second half, but the play of juniors Damarius Owens and Tyler Pelkey (15 and 13 points respectively) was enough to hold off a late SWOP run.
The Pioneers will take on Moravian Prep on Saturday 11/5 and The Skills Factory on Sunday 11/6 in the Griffin Elite Classic (Erlanger, KY).
WRA will be hosting a CanAm tournament on campus November 11-13 in the MAC gym.
