On Monday, Feb. 27, the inside of the Chapel echoed with applause as members of the school community honored the 2016-17 winter sports season and the scholar-athletes whose hard work and commitment made it a great one.
More than 25 students were recognized for their athletic achievement in the school's winter sports, which consists of boys basketball, girls basketball, diving, ice hockey, riflery, boys swimming, girls swimming and wrestling.
Among the many accolades distributed at the ceremony, two students were honored with the Gold Medal Award, the highest athletic honor a student can receive at Reserve. Riflery co-captain Nick Harris '17 and fellow marksman (and West Point-bound athlete) Matt Lovre '17 were chosen for their incredible athletic performances, grit and commitment to their sport and to their team. They are the third and fourth Riflery athletes to receive the Gold Medal Award in the school's history.
"This is only the second time in 19 years of being a presenter at this winter athletic assembly that I've had the occasion to bestow upon an athlete a gold medal, WRA's highest recognition for achievement in a sport," said Head Coach and History Chair Diccon Ong '81, who last awarded a Riflery athlete seven years ago. "I've not one athlete to honor today, but two... Between them, they have set a new standard of excellence for this sport at WRA."
Congratulations to all of our honored athletes for a great winter season!
