On Monday, March 5, the WRA community gathered in the Chapel to celebrate the successes of the 2017-18 winter sports season and the student-athletes who distinguished themselves in competition.
During the ceremony, 30 students were recognized for their excellence throughout the winter sports season, which includes boys basketball, girls basketball, diving, ice hockey, riflery, boys swimming, girls swimming and wrestling.
Among those recognized was wrestler Francesco Borsellino '18, who received the Gold Medal Award, the highest athletic honor a student can receive at Reserve. Simply put, Borsellino dominated this season and finished with a 35-1 record – 32 of his wins earned by pin.
"Francesco is explosive, athletic, and just loves to score points — these are, in my opinion, rare qualities for most heavy weights," said Head Coach and Director of Programs John Gordon. Speaking to his qualities off the wrestling mat, Gordon described Borsellino as "a true gentleman, a great teammate, an engaging role model, and someone always willing to help and support those around him."
After all of the awards were bestowed, Director of Athletics & Afternoon Programs Herb Haller spoke to the character displayed by all teams this winter season.
"While the season itself was filled with triumphs and defeats, it was the manner in which all of you competed that should be most gratifying to you, me, your parents, your coaches, and your teammates. Again, congratulations to all," he said.
Head of School Christopher D. Burner '80 concluded the celebration by thanking the winter coaches for their hard work and dedication to their players throughout the season.
