On Monday, Nov. 6, 35 student-athletes received school-wide applause and recognition at the first Athletic Awards ceremony of the 2017-18 school year. Students received honors for demonstrating athletic ability, competitive spirit, teamwork and effort on the field.
Abby King '18 was awarded WRA's most prestigious athletic prize — the Gold Medal award. With 12 varsity letters to her name, both league and district player of the year honors and with 83 goals and 43 assists over her four-year career, King will leave a lasting legacy as one of WRA's most outstanding soccer players. She will continue her soccer career in college, recently committing to Denison University to play soccer and lacrosse. Last year, more than 20 percent of WRA seniors went on to play collegiate sports.
Director of Athletics & Afternoon Programs Herb Haller congratulated the fall sports teams for their successful seasons, and even gave a special shout out to D-Squad soccer who finished its season undefeated with a record of 2-0. He credited the student body for playing with enthusiasm and rallying around each other all season with support and cheer. WRA's athletic requirement continues to be a point of pride and distinction, involving everyone from the top competitive athlete to the casual player in the fun, fulfillment and camaraderie of sport.
Congratulations to all of our students who were honored at the ceremony. We look forward to another successful athletic season this winter.
