Western Reserve Academy's spring season is always full of the Fine & Performing Arts. Whether it's a staged comedy, a special Chapel performance during Morning Meeting or a lively dance production — we are thrilled by every opportunity to see our students showcase their talents.

On Friday, April 28, the Academy String Orchestra and Reserve Symphonic Winds will take to the Knight Fine Arts Center stage for their final performance of the year. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. and features a diverse musical lineup, including Prelude on an Old English Hymn, which includes an arrangement of All Creatures of our God and King for woodwinds, brass and percussion. The orchestra will also perform Air on the G String by J.S. Bach and Handel's St. Paul's Suite.

"I challenged both the band and the orchestra for this concert," said Director of Music Programs Will Talaba. "All the music that we're performing at this concert is a grade level up from what we've been doing in the past. The level of difficulty has definitely been pushed for them, and they're doing an amazing job."

The orchestra has been working hard to implement the techniques and the sound production required in Handel's and Bach's pieces.

"This is hard music," said Talaba. "All the parts are extremely exposed, so every part is kind of like a solo in itself. We've spent a lot of work and time on refining our sound as a group so that when we put everything together — the different layers of the texture and the different parts — it all comes through. That's been a big challenge, and they've done a great job."

At the request of the senior members of the orchestra, both ensembles will join together on stage at the end of the concert to perform a medley of beloved songs from classic Disney films, including The Lion King's Circle of Life, Mary Poppins' Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Peter Pan's Never Smile at a Crocodile and Aladdin's A Whole New World.

On Sunday, April 30, at 5 p.m. all are welcome to join us in the Chapel for the Spring Choir Concert, A Magic Made by Melody.

Inspired by the wonderful setting of Elizabeth Bishop's poem I am in Need of Music, this concert will feature The Academy Choir and Chamber Choir, as well as several stellar seniors. Come and enjoy our talented student-vocalists perform Mozart's Missa Brevis in C The Sparrow, spirituals, contemporary a cappella tunes and plenty of magical melodies.
