The WRA Varsity Boys Soccer team hosted the Cathedral Prep Ramblers from Erie, PA on Saturday. This is a team used to winning their district championship on a regular basis and going to the state playoff tournament. On a hot and humid afternoon the Pioneers faced a determined and athletic opponent.
A few of WRA’s starters were not available because of injuries and Head Coach Herb Haller had to make some adjustments in the team’s lineup. The Ramblers were physically a good match for WRA but the Pioneers had an advantage in terms of technical and tactical skill, which led to the first goal in the 20th minute. A free kick by Pedro Lyra '23 that the Ramblers defense could not control eventually found Agustín Duarte '23 who scored from a short distance to give WRA the 1:0 lead. 9 minutes later, Cathedral Prep senior Reece Johnson scored the tying goal with a penalty kick that resulted from a defensive mistake at the Pioneer’s end of the field. The score did not change for the remainder of the game. The WRA defense anchored by center backs Kelly Janssen '23 and Ty Mikula '23 worked very hard and effectively to keep the Rambler’s offense from creating chances for themselves. Although the Pioneer offense had more shots on goal and corner kicks, particularly during the second half, the final score was a 1:1 tie.
The Pioneers will play at Wooster High School next on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. under the lights.
