Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Soccer team for facing their toughest opponent yet and bringing home a W.
The WRA Varsity Boys Soccer team traveled to Medina High School on Tuesday to play against the Bees at their Memorial stadium. They are a perennial contender in the Division I playoffs and have reached the regional finals for the past six years. This was the Pioneers’ toughest game so far and thus the 3:1 win is even more precious.
Medina had a lot of fans and a vociferous student section which did not distract but encouraged the Pioneers to play with more focus and determination for each other. The game was played in its entirety with a high level of intensity and skill on both sides. Medina scored the first goal off of a free kick in the 19th minute. The WRA defense was just a bit slow to realize the opponent’s restart strategy. The Pioneers responded six minutes later with a goal by Jayden Gaynor '23 off a perfect cross by Hamza Kromah '24. The game remained tied for the first half and late into the game. The Pioneers raised the pressure on the Bees during the second half and created a number of opportunities to go ahead, forcing the Medina goalie to make some big saves. With ten minutes left in the contest Agustín Duarte '23 decided to take the WRA team on his shoulders and to force the win. With 8 minutes left he scored with a direct free kick from 22 yards out to the near post that left the goalie no chance. A few minutes earlier, he had a similar opportunity and hit the crossbar for the ball to bounce out. In the final two minutes, the Pioneers earned a corner kick and Pedro Lyra '23 dribbled the short ball to the edge of the box beating several defenders, passing it off to Duarte '23 who beat the goalie and secured the win and the 3:1 final score.
Next, the Pioneers will host Cathedral Preparatory School Ramblers from Erie, PA on Saturday, September 3, at noon at the WRA stadium.
