Girls Soccer Soars Past the Fighting Irish
Joey Randazzo

It was a chilly late September evening with an exciting game under the lights.

On Thursday, September 29th, the Pioneers of Western Reserve Academy headed
south to Akron to take on the Fighting Irish of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. It was a chilly
late September evening with an exciting game under the lights. With a loud fan-base, it felt as
though the Irish had a strong home field advantage.
The Irish started out by utilizing the speed of their forwards, sending several crosses into the
Pioneers’ defensive corners of the field. However, they failed to connect on these passes. The
WRA defenders used these opportunities to build out of the back of the field and the whole team
utilized their superior ball handling skills to connect passes in the midfield. The Pioneers
maintained possession and made quick passes around the Irish squad. Sophomore Ky Hau-
Golden, Junior Jazi Gonzalez, and Senior Sierra Shapiro combined for 6 shots on the St.
Vincent-St. Mary goal that were all stopped by the Irish goalkeeper in the first half. Pioneer
Junior goalkeeper Alondra Iriarte only needed to make two saves to keep the opponent
scoreless in the first 40 minutes. WRA maintained the offensive pressure and were rewarded
with a goal off the foot of Gonzalez from the far-right side of the goal box with less that 2
minutes remaining in the first half. That quieted the home team’s fans and energized the Pioneers
as they headed into the halftime huddle.
The Pioneers started the second half looking to find opportunities to make passes around the
slow St. Vincent-St. Mary defensive line. In the 60th minute, Hau-Golden stole the ball off a big
first touch from an Irish defender, used her speed to beat the defenders and put another shot into
the side netting to put the Pioneers up 2-0. At this point, freshman goalkeeper Matilda Lawlor
entered the game and Reserve maintained their dominant play on the field. With 10 minutes left
in the game, Jazi Gonzalez received an Irish goal kick in the middle of the field and dribbled past
several defenders to put a third goal in the back of the net for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers finished the game with a 3-0 win over the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish.
Iriarte recorded 3 saves in the game, with 1 for Lawlor. The Western Reserve Academy Girls
Soccer team takes on Gilmour Academy this Monday, October 3rd at home in the Stadium at 5pm.
