The WRA Boys Soccer team took its first weekend trip to the Mainline Jamboree near Philadelphia, PA. They faced the Hoosac School from Hoosick, NY on the campus of the Westtown School in Westchester, PA. This was an intense and entertaining game against an experienced and resourceful opponent.

Senior Anthony Grguric started in goal and played his first full game of the season. The Pioneers began the game focused and with high intensity, taking the lead 8 minutes into the first half. Midfielder Christian Tan ‘24 collected a ball that bounced off a defender and buried it low in the far corner, leaving Hoosac’s senior goalie Joe Ballester no chance. The score remained unchanged for the rest of the match, but both sides created scoring opportunities that forced the goalies to make saves. Each team managed to hit the post or the crossbar once as well.

During the second half, Hoosac put on more pressure, and it took a lot of concentration and effort from the WRA defenders Ty Mikula ‘23, Chris Philibin ‘23, Davis Novak ‘25 and Kelly Janssen ‘23 to support Grguric and keep the clean sheet. As the referee influenced the game more and more, the emotions ran higher, and he showed yellow cards to both sides. In addition, Hoosac had a midfielder ejected with a straight red card after he took out Hamza Kromah ‘24, sliding straight into him from behind. Despite the officiating, the game was played with a high level of quality and intensity from both sides.

The Pioneers’ next home game is on Thursday, 9/22/22 at the WRA Stadium against Grand River Academy.
