Fine & Performing Arts at WRA

Western Reserve Academy's Fine & Performing Arts Department is staffed by a group of talented, caring and enthusiastic artists who have chosen to make sharing their passion for the arts their life's work. Members of the department continue to engage in creative endeavors themselves-- performing, creating, painting, casting, designing, acting and writing--while inspiring young artists to develop their own skills and, more importantly, to find their own passion. We are proud of a long heritage of commitment to excellence in the arts and the feeling of camaraderie among faculty members; our students are members of a supportive artistic community where open access to facilities and independent work are as important as what occurs in the classroom.

Major theatrical productions, dance concerts, musical masterworks, student recitals and gallery shows provide for a very full yearly calendar, while informal art shows, coffee houses and student-led readings augment our offerings. Close proximity to the vibrant arts communities in Cleveland and Akron is a side benefit and students and faculty alike take advantage of the many offerings. Western Reserve Academy is a creative and active community where faculty and students work together to discover and celebrate the artist within each of us.

Dazzling, entertaining and highly professional, WRA's outstanding dance program reflects our dedication to formal training, performance opportunities and student choreography. Students work with professional dance faculty and choreographers from the local area. The dance program focuses on the disciplines of ballet, as well as modern and jazz dance, and openly incorporates many other dance techniques. Dance students have a chance to explore and create their own choreography, lighting, staging and costuming.

Facilities for dance include:

  • Spacious, ballet barre- and mirror-lined studio with a customized wood springboard floor
  • 400-seat, fully equipped theater
  • Outfitted with lighting and sound equipment
  • Facility managed by E.T.C.P. certified technician
  • Office and dressing room for instructor attached to the dance studio
  • Costume room and storage

Science at WRA

Western Reserve Academy's science faculty engages and challenges students, both in and out of the classroom. Classes are interactive and inclusive, and we know our students well. Rigor, discovery, observation, critical analysis and a sense of responsible application mark the study of science at WRA. The department's aim is to give students a thorough science background, leaving them well prepared to choose an area of specialization in college and beyond.

Courses are available to students of wide-ranging ability and at every grade level. Each course contains a certain core of factual information, but the emphasis is on science as a process of inquiry, facilitated by laboratory experience.
