ATHLETICS

Season Summary 2007-2008

With the departure of eight strong seniors in 2007, we were prepared to rebuild with a new, energetic and talented group of rising sophomores, juniors and seniors. Early preparation with stick skills and conditioning helped the girls open with wins over Marian High School and Cranbrook -Kingswood of Michigan in an opening play day. The team continued to win their next five games. Unfortunately we had quite a few injuries which took some key players out of the following five games.

Highlight games included wins over a strong Evanston, Ilinois team at the Windy City Tournament in Chicago, a win over Shaker Heights (the first in five years), and MSLA tournament wins over; Academy of the Sacred Heart in Michigan, and Lorne Park from Windsor, Canada. Taryn Murray and Elizabeth Clegg were named to the MSLA All-Tournament team and captains, Katie Russell, Paige Cowie and Elizabeth Clegg were selected to the All-Midwest team representing the top 24 players in the MSLA.

A number of WRA players were honored with regional and national awards this season. Sara Wroblewski was selected to 2nd team Great Lakes National Team. Elizabeth Clegg was named 1st team All-District with Katie Russell and Clare Manoli making Honorable Mention.

High School All-America selections were announced in June and WRA is very pleased that Elizabeth Clegg has been named a 1st team All-American.

Four WRA Varsity starters garnered Academic All American Honors; Maddy Stumpf, Elizabeth Clegg, Lesley Robertshaw and Katie Russell.

At the year end WRA athletic awards assembly, the following awards were announced: Spirit Award winner, Maddy Stumpf, Most Improved Player, Kelsey Closen, Most Valuable Players; captains, Elizabeth Clegg, Paige Cowie and Katie Russell. Elizabeth Clegg was also honored with WRA's most prestigious athletic award, the Gold Medal. Clare Manoli and Sara Wroblewski were named 2008 team captains.

All Midwest player Paige Cowie will be continuing her academic pursuits and lacrosse career at Connecticut College. All-American, Elizabeth Clegg will matriculate to Bowdoin College where she plans on playing field hockey and lacrosse.

During the 2008 season, the entire team pulled together and a number of younger players really stepped up to help win some key games. "I really enjoyed coaching this year's senior players," Coach Schmitt said. "They were smart, hardworking and upbeat. They were the easiest, most positive group of seniors I have coached in a very long time. As sad as it is to lose my senior players, I always look forward to beginning a new season with my returning kids and younger, new players. It will be like opening a wonderful new present next February."
