Athletics at Western Reserve Academy

One hundred and twenty years ago, WRA students competed in (and won!) their first interscholastic baseball game. By participating in a demanding athletics program, they learned how to win with humility and lose with dignity. In today's fast-paced collaborative culture, the value of participating in a team sport is perhaps even greater. WRA graduates fare better with the challenge of balancing intellectual stimulation with active, physically fit lifestyles.

Thanks to the wealth of our facilities and resources, WRA supports more than 45 separate interscholastic teams in more than 20 sports. As such, WRA students -- from rookies to those who plan to play at the next level -- are given differentiated support from their coaches and our Strength and Conditioning staff. Each season, additional offerings such as weight lifting, yoga and tai chi activities add further possibilities to consider.

Philosophy

The essentials of teamwork, skill development, positive attitude, school spirit, physical fitness, and sportsmanship are all addressed both in-season during practices and competition, and out-of-season, through training. Our coaches understand, and work to show that much of what is learned on the field or court during their time representing WRA is applicable to the classroom, and throughout life.

Our graduates go on to successfully pursue their intellectual curiosities while maintaining an active, physically fit lifestyle, either on their own or competitively at the college level.

Western Reserve’s athletics requirement develops discipline, dedication and resilience in our students.

Our Coaches

Expert coaching is a complex and demanding form of teaching. Most of our coaches also teach in the classroom, so they are adept in the art of motivating teenagers, encouraging positive risk-taking and cultivating healthy group dynamics. And several of our faculty-coaches are themselves high-level athletes. For example: Herb Haller '85, who has been head coach of boys soccer for 11 years, captained Indiana University's Hoosiers to the 1988 National Championship.
