The Catcher in the Rye took first in the academic category of the Hollywood Hudson Film Festival.

Hollywood came to Western Reserve Academy on May 5 as The Junior Leadership Hudson group hosted the second Hollywood Hudson Film Festival.

There were 20 films submitted this year in a variety of categories, according to Alex Wheaton ’14, a Junior Leadership Hudson member. The group expanded the requirements this year to appeal to a wider audience.

“The films had to be two to six minutes long, and academic films in other languages had to be translated into English,” said Matt Hard ’13, a Junior Leadership Hudson member. “We went a little broader this year.”

Jenny Xu ’15, Lily Liu ’14 and Abigail Agosto ’14 combined on a film entitled The Catcher in the Rye that won the academic category. When asked about the film, Hard replied that it was “very professional.” He also included that the judge of the competition, Rob Lucas, was “very impressed.”

Nathan Hulsey ’12 earned a second-place finish in the creative category with his film, Where the Deer Walk.

Lucas, a co-director of the Akron Film Festival, was so impressed by the quality of the films that he is going to show some of them to his company.

Junior Leadership Hudson is a group of 18 students – nine from WRA and nine from Hudson High School – who spend the academic year meeting with guest speakers and visiting worksites to learn innovative leadership skills in monthly, daylong sessions.

In addition to Wheaton and Hard, Junior Leadership Hudson members from WRA include sophomores Linda Adams, Alex Fellows and Jack McKenzie; and juniors Audrey Brown, Julia Schiciano, Scott Schultz and Pauline Van Dijck.

Leadership Hudson program facilitators include Kate Harmon, communications and operations manager at the GAR Foundation; Chuck Wiedie, Hudson economic development director; William Bugg WRA assistant head of school; Dr. Paul Milcetich, Hudson High School unit principal; Janet Neff, Hudson High School faculty member; Kim Barsella ’84, WRA math teacher and junior Class Dean; and Kathy Cybulski, Rotarian and retired Hudson librarian.
