News: Renowned speaker visits

On May 3, Dr. Stephen Sroka, one of the most successful and well-known motivational speakers in the U.S. on issues related to adolescent health, was invited to speak to WRA's freshmen class. Dr. Sroka's visit to WRA was made possible by a generous grant from the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation.

Dr. Sroka is an award-winning educator. A recipient of the Disney Health Teacher of the Year award, he is also a member of the National Teachers Hall of Fame. He has authored a popular text entitled, Educator's Guide to HIV/AIDS and other STDs, and has presented his message to millions of students and adults around the world. He has been a guest on Oprah and featured in USA Today.

Dr. Sroka, an adjunct assistant professor in the School of Medicine, Division of Adolescent Health, at Case Western Reserve University, spoke with WRA students as part of their health curriculum. His entertaining presentation and enthusiastic delivery had the rapt attention of students and faculty alike. The essence of his message is the belief that each person is a "Power of One" and can make significant contributions to the health and well being of fellow students in their schools and communities.

Dr. Sroka addressed issues such as respecting the Internet and understanding that information posted online lives forever, and the dangerous and lasting effects of cyber bullying. His message of "what you permit, you promote," resonated with students and adults alike. The presentation ended with students using markers to design their own T-shirts in words and pictures that represented who they are and what they believe in.
