News: Hudson Relay recreated

Early on the morning of April 24, a group of WRA students, teachers, alumni and friends participated in the Centennial Hudson Relay celebration. They participated by recreating the historic running of the Hudson Relay from the campus of Western Reserve Academy to Adelbert Hall at Case Western Reserve University.

In 1910, students of Western Reserve College first celebrated Founders Day by running The Hudson Relay from the original campus in Hudson to the college's campus in Cleveland.

Today, the Case relay teams no longer run their Hudson Relays from Hudson to University Circle, but rather they run a course around their downtown campus. However, the WRA team ran the original route by completing 26, one-mile legs. Because the Case event began at 9 a.m., Eugene Thomas '68, director of college guidance and girls varsity track coach, started Reserve's relay team on their way north at 6 a.m.

In accordance with tradition, runners passed a baton containing a letter from Head of School Christopher Burner '80 to Case President Barbara Snyder congratulating the university on the special occasion. Head of School Burner was on the podium with President Snyder to greet the WRA runners when they arrived at the university's campus and to announce the start of the centennial celebration.

WRA participants ran their miles quickly and enthusiasm grew as they cheered on their fellow runners. Case's student Affairs Office gave each participant a Centennial T-shirt and hosted WRA runners to breakfast before their return to campus.
