Culture Night At Reserve - Overview

Culture Night - March 4, 2007

CULTURE NIGHT AT RESERVE

The Department of Foreign Languages and SICU (Students for Intercultural Understanding) held the annual Culture Night celebration in March. Many of our international students took part in the event, either by preparing a presentation, preparing food or serving food and explaining the dishes from their country to the community. ELISA students who visited Germany shared their experiences with us. At the end of the presentations a fashion show of different cultural traditional dress was directed by Calais Weber.  The show was most successful. The models showcased clothes from different cultures. The final presentation was a surprise one - thanks to Mr. Haile - who provided the funding to bring back the musical group Papa Susso.

Following the presentation, all headed to the Moos Art Gallery for food. We want to thank the parents, faculty, and students who prepared such a delicious and varied meal for us to enjoy.

SICU works closely with WRA’s Department of Foreign Languages to encourage appreciation for languages and for peoples of other cultures. The club also organizes presentations of different countries throughout the year. Special projects by SICU include the Bead Sale to support a child in the Dominican Republic. This year proceeds from this activity were donated to the Katrina hurricane victims.

SICU also actively participates in the Educate the Congo Project under the supervision of Madam Eschenauer. Reserve donates books and computers to this program.

CULTURE NIGHT AT RESERVE - MARCH 4, 2007

CULTURE NIGHT

By Jill Coleman

On March 4, the entire Western Reserve community gathered to celebrate culture night.  Culture night is a chance for students to talk about their home countries and for students participating in a foreign language to educate about the countries they are studying.  Culture night included presentations covering Berlin, Hong Kong, Korea, Peru, Switzerland and China.  We also heard from the ELISA scholars who talked about their trip to Germany, Dean Theopolis who provided a very entertaining Latin recitation, and Ms. Chen's Mandarin Chinese singers.

Calais Weber put together a beautiful fashion show that depicted how the use of the kimono has changed throughout the years.  The presentations were concluded with a rousing concert from Papa Susso.

The presentations were followed by a multicultural buffet that included food from around the world.  You could sample authentic Cajun, Chinese, Costa Rican, German, Green, Indian, Italian, Jamaican, Korean, Middle Eastern, Pakistani, Polis, Romanian, Russian, Swiss, Taiwanese and Ukrainian food all without having to hop on a plane.  Culture night gives the students and parents of Reserve a chance to get to know their fellow students and their cultural history.
