New York City

The first week of Reserve's three week long spring break, a group of 30 students and 4 teachers went on a trip to New York City. We went to the opera one night and then got to choose which three shows we wanted to see. My best friend and I stuck together and saw Chicago, Avenue Q, and the Perfect Crime together. They were all really great shows. We also did lots of other things like going to the Met and going shopping in Chinatown and Soho. Every day was so much fun, and I am so glad that I went!

The Junior Writing Exam

Today, the entire junior class took the four hour Junior Writing exam. At first thinking about sitting in a room and going through the entire writing process seemed very daunting, but it turned out to be not half as bad as I was expecting. This exam has gone on at the school for many years so I had heard a lot about it. The day before the exam, every junior is given a short story and a poem in the open mail boxes. We then have that night to read and discuss the material with our peers. My english teacher was even kind enough to allow our class to discuss our thoughts on the poem during our class time. She, however, did not give any imput because we are not supposed to get help from anyone other then each other. It was a good way for us to hear each other's ideas in an informal setting and I really enjoyed that part of the process.

On the day of the exam we are given two prompts, one on the poem and one on the short story and you are to choose one to write about once you arrive. You then spend the rest of the four hourse brainstorming, writing, and revising your paper, turning the final product in using pen. Then, the entire English Department spends the next few days reading the essays. You are given a total of eight points, four from each of the two teachers who read it. Because of this process, I learned alot about my thoughts and also about my ablilties to write, which I initially did not want to do at all.

Installation

A few weeks ago, the student body, faculty and special guests witnessed a very special and important event in Reserve's history: the installation of a new headmaster. This is the first time it has happened in 35 years and we all felt honored to be a part of it. Having sat at Mr. Burner's(the new headmaster) table last year, I had gotten to know him a little and was very excited to see him installed into such an important position. He is a graduate of the school and has been a part of this community for a long time. We, as students, all feel comfortable with him already and he is stepping up nicely to some large expectations.

The first marking period has just ended and everyone has gotten off to a great start. The next marking period should be a great one with the musical and winter sports to look forward to.

Start of School

We are two weeks into school, and well into the swing of things. I have reacquainted will all of my friends, and made many new ones. It is such a great experience to get know people from all over the world. Everyone is getting used to the rigorous but rewarding curriculum that Reserve offers, and working hard to stay on top of the work load. The field hockey team which I am a part of has gotten off to a gret start, recently beating Stow 5-0. We are undefeated with a record of 4-1-0. Although we have had some changes from last year, everyone seems to be adapting very well and I am looking forward to a great year!

Softball

With the change of seasons comes the beginning of softball season. Being a part of the team is like being a part of one big family. Every minute spent on the field is a fun time to be had by all, and although it can be time consuming I wouldn't trade it for the world! With the encouragement and skill of our coaches, and the spirit and talent of the players, we have started the season off strongly with three wins and only one loss! The girls are all good sports with awesome school spirit. It is a privilege to be a part of this team!

The Miracle Worker

What an incredible week! The production of The Miracle Worker, the story of Helen Keller, finally took place. Hair spray, bobby pins, curling irons, multiple costume pieces, props and rapid costume changes. Even with a small part, from the first line to the final bow I was constantly busy...and I LOVED every second of it. I have been in quite a few productions in my life, but never have I experienced something so amazing as The Miracle Worker. It was such an honor to be a part of such a talented cast, with so many great people. All three nights were flawless, and I had so much fun. It was by far one of the best experiences I have had at Reserve.

Play Practice

This winter, Western Reserve Academy will be putting on a production of "The Miracle Worker." It is an amazing play about the life of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. Although this play is not going to be performed until February 15, the cast has been working on it since the end of November. I have a small role as one of the Perkins girls, who used to live with Annie until she left to take care of Helen. Because I have a small part I'm only needed at practice about once a week, but I really enjoy being in a play. It's great hanging out with my friends and having us all work toward the huge goal of performing the play in front of a live audience. Overall, the play is really coming together and I can't wait until opening night!

Sadies

This weekend Sadie's took place in Ellsworth Hall. Sadie's is a formal dance where the girls ask the guys. Beforehand people usually get together in a group and go out to dinner and arrive at the dance together. This year my group decided to go to dinner at a restaurant where they cook the food in front of you. Afterwards we took pictures, then went to the dance. These dances are beautifully set up and they are a great way to spend time with your friends. It was so fun to hang out with my friends before exam week, and I can't wait until the next one!

"This is Urinetown"

This past weekend was the production of the musical Urinetown. It is the story of a town that has had a very long drought and is forced to pay to use the restroom. It was one of the most exciting things I have been a part of at this school. Although I was not actually on the stage, I controlled one of the spotlights. The cast had been practicing together for months, but when the stagecrew came in to help, they gave us equal credit for the production. It was a great way to support old and new friends, and we all became so much closer because of it. I hope that I will have the privilege to be a part of such a wonderful event again very soon.
