New School Year "Starts Quite Well." Campus Changes Underway to Meet Current and Future Needs
At a September meeting of new members of the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Association Board, Headmaster Skip Flanagan reported that 2002 - 2003 was off to a smooth start. Changes include several new faculty members who, he says, are quickly becoming a part of the community. The Headmaster also outlined current curriculum priorities, which are focusing on the Freshman Experience, foreign language studies, and art and music. Weekend programs for boarding students are also under review.
There are some significant physical changes on campus, as well. The former driveway that led from Oviatt Street up past Wilson Hall to behind Seymour Hall has been reconfigured. The driveway now stops at Wilson Hall, where a turnaround has been created to facilitate dropping off and picking up day students. Parking near Wilson Hall has been expanded. The road from Wilson to and behind Seymour (pictured above) is now a well-landscaped brick walkway. This, says Skip, eliminates the traffic congestion that formerly posed a danger to pedestrians in the Wilson and Seymour Hall areas.
To accommodate the new field house that will soon be built behind the Memorial Gym, the football field and track are being relocated to the area immediately north of the current location. Other changes to both indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are planned, as well. Watch for details soon.
Significant improvements (pictured left) are being made to accommodate faculty who live in Ellsworth Hall. New apartments at the north end will provide living quarters that rival the finest anywhere on campus, the Headmaster notes.
Reserve Attendance a Tradition in Many Families
Thirty-one of Reserve's new 2002 - 2003 students will have to live down - or live up to - the antics and accomplishments of other family members who went before them. They include brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and grandchildren of Reserve alumni or current Reserve students. The new 2002 - 2003 legacies are:

Reunion 2003 Set For June 6 - 8
Before the charcoal was barely cold from the 2002 Reunion picnic, plans were already underway for the gathering in 2003. The dates are Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8. It will, of course, be official reunion years for those in classes ending in 3 and 8. As always, however, alumni from all years are encouraged to attend, and many do. (See Reunion Weekend links to the right.)
A new attraction for the 2003 weekend will be a golf tournament at Hudson Country Club on Friday afternoon, provided a minimum of 72 golfers sign up. New Alumni Association Board member Bill Janney '72 is organizing the tournament, along with Hudson Country Club member Charlie Hammel '65. To enable all to finish in time for the evening reception and dinner, the course will be reserved exclusively for the tournament, and will feature a shotgun start. More details about the tournament will follow.
If you wanted to attend Reunion 2002, but could not, or if you just want to see what went on, then visit the Reunion News & Events section on www.wra.net to read about and see highlights of the weekend.
Have You Registered Yet With the Online Alumni Directory?
Over 1,000 of you have! As you may know, the Reserve Alumni Directory went online last spring, sponsored and funded in part by the WRA Alumni Association Board. The directory provides current information about Reserve alumni and enables you to search for your friends by criteria such as first name, last name, location and class year. It is a great way to stay in touch.
To register now:
(1) Find your latest Alumni Office publication (Summer Bulletin, School Calendar, Annual Report) and look on the mailing label for the number just above your name. This is your password.
(2) If you do not have a recent publication, send an e-mail to alumni@wra.net and request your password.
(3) Next, go to the Online Alumni Directory page and choose First Time User.
(4) Enter your last name, then type your password into the Constituent ID space.
That's it. Immediately after you log in, you'll be asked to assign your own user ID and password. Assign something that's easy for you to remember, but if you forget, the directory can provide a reminder.

Alumni Gatherings Remain Popular
As usual, gatherings of Reserve alumni at various cities around the country continue to be popular, well-attended events.
In Cincinnati, alumni and Reserve staff met at the West Chester Marriott on October 18. New Yorkers met at the Times Square Marriott Marquis a week later.
Upcoming events include Chicago (Nov. 22); Washington, D.C. (Dec. 5); Akron-Cleveland (Dec. 10); Hudson - Young Alumni (Dec. 26). Watch for details in the mail, or check the on-line calendar at wra.net for the latest information.
WRA Receives a Historic Marker

On Friday, September 27, Western Reserve Academy held a brief dedication ceremony commemorating the installation of an Ohio Historical Marker on the campus. The event took place in the Chapel. The marker, which commemorates the 1826 founding of Western Reserve College and Western Reserve Academy, has been placed at the College Street end of the Chapel walkway. For more about this ceremony and marker, click here.
Ah, Yes! I Remember It Well.
Or do you? In what year was Wood House completed? When was the Chapel bell replaced? For that matter, when was the Chapel tower itself replaced and when was its third tier restored? In what year did Stretch retire?

A new section on the WRA website answers these and many more questions about Reserve's 175 year history. Key events in the school's history are cataloged by decade, many with accompanying photographs. Use this information to amaze your friends with your sharp-as-a-tack memory. Better yet, start arguments and make bets about Reserve history that you know you can win. Follow this link to fame and fortune.
Alumni Can Aid Admission Office
Hosting information sessions for prospective students and mentoring current ones are two of the ways that alumni can help support Admission Office programs.
"Reserve Evenings" are small gatherings where prospective students and their parents meet with a member of the Admission Office at the home of an alumnus or alumna. Anthony '79 and Mary Grace Boerio recently hosted a Reserve Evening in Pittsburgh. Students from St. Edmunds Academy and the Valley School of Ligonier, and their families, had a unique opportunity to speak one-on-one with Admission Director Britt Flanagan and Headmaster Skip Flanagan. They were joined by Bob Colonna, a current parent with two children at Reserve, who was able to offer yet another perspective about the school.
An upcoming Reserve Evening is scheduled to be hosted by Alden Hathaway '77 in the Washington, D.C. area. Anyone wishing to host a Reserve evening is encouraged to contact the Admission Office by e-mail at admission@wra.net.
