Homecoming Weekend Inaugurates New Stadium
More than 120 alumni and family members attended the first Alumni Association Board-sponsored Homecoming Day on September 20, 2003. Events included a picnic on the Pierce House grounds and the inauguration of Reserve's new athletic stadium complex, featuring the Pioneers' first home game of the season. While the team was unable to prevail over Linsly, it was well supported by the homecoming crowd. For details of the day's events, click here. Alumni Gather at Regional Events
For a number of years now, alumni gatherings have meant more than summer class reunions. In cities across the country, alumni of all ages have been gathering at receptions and dinners to catch up with former classmates, swap stories and meet fellow graduates from other classes. Since the start of the current school year, regional gatherings have been held in the San Francisco area, New York, Santa Monica and Detroit. Read more about the gatherings and to view guest lists and photos.
On the Upcoming Events Calendar is a gathering in Boston on December 4 and the Cleveland area holiday party at the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club on December 9. And there's the always-popular Cleveland area Young Alumni Gathering scheduled for December 26 at Kepner's in Hudson. More regional events are in the works as well. Click here to view the Upcoming Events Calendar, and be sure to check back periodically to see what will be scheduled for the balance of the school year.
Becoming Alumni - AAB Helps Seniors Prepare For Transition
Admittedly, most high school seniors are anxious to move on with their lives. They anticipate the adventures and new-found freedom offered by the college experience. Of course the move from Reserve to college is not always as easy or smooth as expected. For that reason, the Alumni Association Board's Senior Class and Young Alumni Committee is working with the Class of 2004 to help ease the transition. The committee, along with chair Inga Weimer Walker '91 and other AAB members, hosted the senior class at a dinner on October 27, 2003, at a Hudson-area restaurant. While primarily fun and social in nature, students were reminded that they would be Reserve alumni by this time next year, with new opportunities and new life challenges.
In February, the committee is planning a Saturday event on a more serious note, with seminar speakers and panel discussions on the topic of easing the transition to college. Prior to graduation, the Alumni Association Board will again host the senior class at a lunch at Hudson Country Club.
Write the Great Reserve Essay
If you were a student at Reserve before 1983, Jim Gramentine wants to hear your stories. Gramentine, who recently completed the fourth volume in the school's history series, Change and Constancy: Western Reserve Academy, 1967-1982, is beginning work on a book of short, original essays about life at Reserve. Tentatively titled Without Reserve, the book will feature 30 to 40 essays highlighting the years prior to 1983.
Anyone who attended the school for one or more years prior to 1983 is welcome to submit an essay for consideration. Essays may be about any aspect of the author's experience at Reserve, and on average will be between 1,500 and 2,000 words, but shorter or longer essays will be accepted for consideration.
All essays must be submitted by June 30, 2004. A four-person editorial committee will begin reading essays in January 2004, so submissions are welcomed now.
For more information about the project, or for details on submitting an essay for consideration, contact Jim at 9630 N. Lamplighter Lane, Mequon, Wis., 53092, or gramentine@aol.com.

A Knight to Remember: Fred Coffin '61
This summer, Reserve lost a generous and talented alumnus - 1998 Knight Fellow Fred Coffin '61. Longtime faculty master and friend Frank "Stretch" Longstreth offers his remembrance of Fred. An accompanying article (reprinted from the Spring 1998 Reserve Alumni Record) explains how Fred shared his acting experience and career insights with students during his 1998 Knight Fellow campus visit.
