Alumni Receptions Remain Popular
Austin, San Francisco, Naples, and Boston were on the list of alumni gathering spots over the winter and early spring.
The first post-holiday event was in Boston at the Bay Tower Room, where 51 alumni representing classes spanning the past 40 years enjoyed an evening together. In March, 35 alumni representing 12 classes met in San Francisco for cocktails and a performance of the musical Stomp. On St. Patrick's Day, another 35 basked in the warmth of the Naples sun while brunching at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. In early April, veteran Latin teacher John Breuker greeted members of the Reserve family at the Copper Tank Brewing Co. in Austin, Texas. To see which friends and classmates attended these events, click on the links under Recent Event Highlights (right column).

Shop Online for WRA Clothing and Gifts
Do you remember when Robin S. (Wally) Wallace ran the WRA bookstore out of a closet on the main floor of Seymour Hall? If not, you may remember Peg Clewell managing it on the first floor of Seymour, or later, in another, albeit larger, closet on the Chapel ground floor. Today, parents and local alumni frequently visit the spacious Campus Store in the Metcalf Center (the former faculty garage and maintenance shop) to buy gifts or sportswear, and now Campus Store manager Eva Fitzgerald invites alumni worldwide to do the same online. Drop by the new Online Campus Store to browse through and purchase some of the store's more popular items. Just place your selections in the online shopping cart and head for check out. Join the Reserve Online Alumni Directory
Alumni Association president Anne Campbell Goodman '84 is excited to announce that the Association is sponsoring a new Online Alumni Directory. Perhaps you have already received your letter from the Association explaining how to register. It's easy and takes no more than two minutes. So far over 300 alumni have registered.
The key to making the directory a valuable tool is to register and share your information. Here are the benefits:
- It's fast, secure, and convenient to register;
- Specific safeguards are in place to protect your privacy;
- The directory offers simple and advanced search features. Search by city, class year, name, state, college, etc.;
- It's the best way to share current information.
Watch the mail for your Alumni Association letter due to arrive in your mail shortly and follow the simple instructions to register. For first time users, your user ID is your last name; your password is provided in your letter and is also printed on the spring Reserve Alumni Record mailing label. Click here to take a quick look at the Online Alumni Directory main page.
Reserve's History Further Chronicled
Change and Constancy: Western Reserve Academy, 1967-1982, the latest installment of the history of Western Reserve Academy, will be available by Reunion weekend, June 7-9. The 250-page paperback book (including appendices and more than 100 photographs) was researched and authored by Reserve alumnus Jim Gramentine.
"The book covers the administrations of headmasters Peter Briggs and Hunter Temple during an era of social revolution, a period when the world turned upside down and Reserve was profoundly changed," Jim explains. "My fundamental purpose is to explain what was changed, how, why, and by whom. To a considerable degree, it is the students' tale. Forty-seven alumni/ae were interviewed. Students, assisted by their faculty friends, were the principal agents of change, though they are largely unaware of that, even today."
Jim graduated from Reserve in 1952 and was a member of the Reserve faculty from 1958 to 1972. He also was serving as admissions director when the first girls were accepted in 1972. The book is his principal gift to his alma mater on the occasion of his 50th reunion.

Planned Giving Advisory Committee Hosts Cleveland Luncheon Meeting
In February, 28 alumni, staff, and Reserve friends attended a special luncheon presentation in Cleveland sponsored by the Planned Giving Advisory Council. The topic was: "Family Wealth: Values and Capital -- Who Will Be Your Philanthropic Partner?" This gathering, held at The Union Club, addressed a number of the issues families face today in estate and financial planning.
Bob Garfield '46, a member of the Advisory Council, introduced the program and explained that Reserve's Planned Giving Program is a long-term initiative. He said that the Reserve Heritage Society (alumni and friends who have included Reserve in their estate plans), now numbers more than 100 people, with 17 new members in this year alone.
The featured speaker at the luncheon was Marie Mirro Edmonds, Esq., founding member of the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, the Ohio Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, and the Ohio College of Estate Planning. Ms. Edmonds advises professionals and clients throughout the greater Cleveland area.
The Planned Giving Advisory Committee is making copies of this seminar available to alumni and friends via compact disc or video tape. To receive your free copy, please call the Alumni and Development Office at (330) 650-9701, or e-mail Joan Bigham, Director of Planned Giving, bighamj@wra.net.
