Homecoming - Bigger and Better than Ever - October 1

Homecoming 2005 will be bigger and better than ever. October 1 is the day, and it promises to be one with something for everyone. So plan to join Honorary Grand Marshal Frank “Stretch” Longstreth for these great events:

Noon – Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Murdough Athletic Center, with games and activities for children so you and your classmates can catch up with each other. As a special added attraction, Jim Gramentine ’51 will be at the lunch to autograph and sell copies of Without Reserve. This newly released hardcover book, inspired, compiled and edited by Jim, is a collection of alumni-authored essays about life at Reserve through 1982. A number of essay authors will also be joining Jim at the autograph table.

1:30 – The girls soccer team takes on Gilmour at the soccer field between College and N. Main Streets.

2:00 – The Pioneers play Culver Military Academy at the football stadium. An alumni pep band will be formed to help cheer the team on. Bring your own instrument, or use one provided by the school (limited availability).

3:30 – Historian and archivist Tom Vince will lead a campus tour from the Ellsworth Hall patio.

4:00 – Return to Murdough for a post-game reception with soft drinks, “adult” beverages and heavy hors d’oeuvres.

Homecoming is sponsored by the WRA Alumni Association Board. While there is no charge for any event, please let us know if you plan to attend (and how many in your family or group) so that we can accommodate you at the picnic lunch and post-game reception. RSVP by sending an e-mail to rothmang@wra.net.

Short Audio Clips: An Insider’s Look at Without Reserve

Why I Did It
What inspired Jim Gramentine to undertake this collection? Jim says the idea occurred to him while he was interviewing alumni and exchanging e-mails for background on his last book, Change and Constancy. To hear Jim’s explanation, click here and choose Why I Did It. [:45]

Living on the Edge
Anyone who has spent time at Reserve knows there are some interesting tales to tell. As senior editor, did Jim find himself faced with tough decisions regarding essay content and propriety? To hear about Jim's dilemmas, click here and choose Living on the Edge. [[:41]

Playing Favorites

Just Putzing Around
Remember putzes? So did our alumni authors! One or two instances are included in the collection as prime examples, and Jim will tell you who wrote his favorite, so click here and go to Just Putzing Around. [:52]

The Fan Factor
Finally, more than a few essayists wrote about adults who had a profound impact on the young people they taught and coached. While the essay collection names many faculty--and some colorful staff as well--did certain individuals get a little additional ink? Well, here’s the scoop. Click here and select The Fan Factor. [1:30]

We hope you'll read the collection, and if one of the essays is particularly meaningful to you, contact Jim and let him know!
