Fiftieth
Edition of Longstreth Relays Set
for April 8

This weekend is the 50th running of the Longstreth Relays.
Are you a former Reserve track star…or at least a former track team
member? Are you a track fan? Are you among the generations
of Reservites who know and appreciate all that Frank “Stretch” Longstreth
did for Reserve and its track teams? If so, Hudson is the
place to be on Saturday, April 8, 2006, when the 50th annual
Longstreth Relays launch
from the starting blocks.
In addition to the meet, which begins at 10 a.m., there will be a special recognition
event for Stretch. Many of Reserve’s track alumni are expected to be on
hand to honor the longtime faculty master and coach, and all alumni are invited
to this very special athletic event. For further information, contact Greta
Rothman,
director of special events.

AAB Again Supports
Women-to-Women Panel Discussion

A group of 10 alumnae panelists participated
in this year's AAB-sponsored annual Women-to-Women program.
On Friday,
February 17, 2006, the Alumni & Development Office
and the Alumni Association Board in conjunction with Elizabeth
Wirtz, dean of student life, held Reserve's annual Women-to-Women
program.
The event, which was designed to provide a relaxed forum
for alumnae to share their experiences and insights from
Reserve and beyond with
current junior and senior girls, was held in the Wilson
Hall Reading Room. The conversation flowed for two hours,
touching on a variety of
topics ranging from what to be "when you grow up" to how
to assert yourself in a "man's work world."
The evening's
moderator was Shannah Tharp Taylor '91, a developmental psychologist
at RAND Corporation in Pittsburgh. Nine other
alumnae joined her on the panel.
For further details and photos, visit the Alumni section
of www.wra.net, select Alumni Events, then Recent
Event Highlights.
Alumni
Gather Coast-to-Coast
Reserve alumni have gotten
together in several cities already this year to rekindle
old friendships and make
new ones. Boston, Akron, Phoenix, Seattle and Portland
were among the venues. Check the guest
lists, event summaries and photos for familiar names
and faces!
In
Memory of Travis W. Webber
Travis W. Webber, German teacher, coach, dean of students
and friend to many, passed away on December 29, 2005, at
the age of 80.
"T" first came to Reserve in 1954
and retired to nearby Stow, Ohio, in 1990. Please take
a moment to read
a retrospective of his career that includes photos
and many alumni tributes.

Alumni Directory Offers Exciting New Features
The
Alumni Association-sponsored Online
Alumni Directory is now
in its third year and boasts nearly 2,000 registered users.
Last month
the directory was upgraded to offer some important new
benefits.
If you are registered already in the directory, please take a moment
now
to review
and update your information. You can check out the new features at the same
time.
If you have not yet registered, please do so today! The
value of the directory greatly depends on the number of
alumni who actively participate. Please become
a new member and join now. (Register using
your last name and a numeric password located on the address label from a recent
alumni magazine or bulletin. Need assistance? Send an e-mail to alumni@wra.net.)
Ten (10) benefits of the expanded directory:
1. It’s easier than ever to use.
2. There’s room for more contact information (website addresses, cell phones,
etc.).
3. The directory is a great way to keep the Alumni & Development Office current
on all of your key contact information. When
you
update your data, the office
receives an automatic notice.
4. You can share or hide directory information
on a line-by-line
basis. For instance, share your home e-mail address,
but hide
your business e-mail address. (Hidden
information is shared with the Alumni Office, but not with your classmates or
other registered alums.)
5. Post your photo to your directory profile page.
6. Prepare and post a family photo album.
7. Designate a personal pals list and use it to keep in touch with one or more
of your WRA friends (during a Reunion year or for a scheduled event).
8. Do quick searches using the directory’s improved
search options. You
can search from your personal profile page, or use the directory’s
main search page.
9. Tell your classmates and other alumni about your interests by posting your
favorite web links.
10. Use “Configure Alerts” to let you know
when a classmate registers or when alumni within a range of years
register.
(For instance, select 1985-1988
or 1999-2003).
If that’s not enough to convince you to join the directory
and/or update
your contact information, here’s another important reason. The Reserve
Alumni
Association’s new MENTORING NETWORK will
be
available this summer. To participate – that
is, be a mentor or request a mentor – you must be a member of the Association’s
Online Alumni Directory. (Read more in the next newsletter
about this new online
Mentoring Network service.)

Students
Design Fashion Show to Benefit ALS Research
Two Western Reserve Academy seniors, Piper Beckwith-Collings
and Katie Gruman, recently organized a charitable fashion
show that brought in more than $4,600 for Project A.L.S.
The duo
chose Project A.L.S. to honor the memory of Beckwith-Collings’ father,
John Russell Collings, who passed away two years ago at the
age of 54 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known
as Lou Gehrig’s disease. After months of planning, “Catwalk
for the Cure” debuted on January 28, 2006, in Ellsworth
Hall to an audience of over 50 people, including students,
family members and WRA alumni. Students modeled original women’s
fashions designed by Beckwith-Collings, along with dresses
donated by Hudson retailers.

To complement the fashions, WRA junior Elizabeth
Timmis provided jewelry from her Elizabeth Darling line, and senior
Jamal Moxley designed and selected clothing
for the male models.

To demonstrate its support, the Alumni Association
Board hosted a luncheon for WRA alumnae at Pierce House
just prior to the 1:00 p.m. fashion show. “We felt that
it was an important event, and we wanted to draw more alumnae to the
show,” said Alumni Association Board Vice President Inga Weimer Walker ’91.
"Catwalk
for the Cure” marks the second time Beckwith-Collings
and Gruman have combined friendship with fundraising. Last
year, the pair organized
a tsunami relief fundraiser. “I helped her with her project last year,
so I turned to her to help me organize the fashion show,” said Beckwith-Collings.
The young designer, who a year ago was the winner of the first Alumni Association
Scholarship Award, says her interest in fashion led her to the idea for the event.
Beckwith-Collings will attend Kenyon College in the fall.

AAB
Nominating Process Underway
In accordance with the by-laws of the Alumni Association,
the Alumni Association Board will hold elections for
one-third of its membership every June. The board has
45 members who serve three-year terms. Each year, the
Nominating Committee is responsible for recommending
15 candidates to serve on the board, as well as filling
seats for board members who have resigned from the board
before completing their terms.
This year, the Nominating Committee is looking for candidates
to serve in the board class of 2009 (serving from July
2006 through June 2009).
Board member duties include
promoting alumni activities for Reunion Weekend, Homecoming,
special projects and
regional events and fostering alumni relations and communications.
Specifically, board members are expected to: attend at
least one of three meetings held during the academic
year, serve on one or more board committees and work
with the Alumni & Development Office to plan and
coordinate area alumni gatherings.
We are especially interested
in finding
alumni who are from regions and classes not currently
represented on
the board. In the event that we receive more nominees
than we can accommodate for current openings, special
consideration will be given to candidates from regions
and classes where representation is needed. If you would
like to nominate yourself to serve on the board, please
complete the online
Nomination Questionnaire, or if you
know of a good candidate, please contact that individual
and encourage him or her to complete the online nomination
form. The deadline for nominations is April 15, 2006.
For additional information, please contact Inga Weimer
Walker '91, chair of the Nominating Committee, at hwalker3@adelphia.net.
